Influencer engagement is no longer a nice to have. It’s a must for businesses that want to expand their digital reach.
This fall I am teaching a Social Media Certificate program at the local community college, and the topic of engaging with influencers has come up. It’s an exciting topic and offers participants a chance to see how engaging with those who influence a topic, region, market, or product can help brand out.
Remember there is a difference between an influencer and brand advocate. Here is an infographic to help you to better understand the differences and benefits of each.

Some Stats

Earlier this year, Technorati released the 2013 Digital Influence Report, which outlines some pretty amazing statistics about the influencers’ role in online and digital marketing, such as:

  • 65 percent of brands participate in influencer marketing; yet only 6 percent of social spend is allocated to marketing to influencers. I’m unsure how that makes sense.
  • 86 percent of influencers blog. Do you have a blog? Maybe they can help you promote it.
  • 31 percent of influencers have been blogging for five or more years.
  • Blogs were found to be the fifth-most trustworthy source overall for information on the Internet. What were the other four? YouTube, Facebook, Retail sites, and Google Plus
